Tomatoes are a great source of carotenoids – particularly one kind called lycopene, which is the pigment that gives tomatoes their characteristic bright red color. Tomatoes are generally safe to consume, but they do have a high acid content, which makes them not the best thing to eat if you have GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.
