Oily Skin – 9 Tips And Remedies To Keep It Under Control.

Handling oily skin isn’t impossible, but definitely takes extra effort. Sebum, dirt, and makeup are the main factors affecting the skin. All you need is a fragrance and oil free face wash, facemask to control sebum and a good moisturizer to fight dryness. Some natural ingredients used as a mask will help too, like honey green tea and clay. Having to live with oily skin can be very tricky. Face wash may be futile and makeup will only alleviate skin problems. And applying powder all the time can be time consuming and exhausting. To make things worse, oily skin is the breeding ground for acne. Oily skin needs a lot of attention and management, and if you start using all the wrong ingredients it would only increase the grease on the face. The idea is to control the sebum and not to dry it out. Sebaceous glands make more oil if the skin starts to dry out. Below are 9 things you can do to control the sebum:

1.A cleansing oil

Wiping your skin with cleansing oil can be a cutting-edge technique. A cleansing oil doesn’t dry out the skin, instead it breaks down sebum, makeup, and dirt while adding moisture. It is a Korean skincare routine that’s taking the United States by storm now. Some of the oils that you can try are buckthorn berry oil and jojoba oil. It is believed that Jojoba oil mimics sebum, which tricks the glands into producing less sebum, which in turn balances the oil on the face. These theories aren’t scientifically proven, therefore you will have to try and see if your skin responds.

2. Wash your face only twice a day

Having an oily skin will make you want to wash your face often, but it’s very important that you limit it to twice a day and after a sweat. Because washing often would only rip away natural oils, which help, keep the skin supple and healthy. Always make sure you wash your face after using a cleansing oil to remove excess oil and dirt. Products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide could be avoided unless your skin is prone to acne. Even then use it only on the affected area so that the healthy part of the skin will not be exposed.

3. Face mask ( 2-3 times of the week)

Oily skin is very prone to breakouts and acne, hence a face mask 2-3 times a week will help combat by unclogging pores and removes trapped oil and gunk. It’s a relaxing way to help your skin rejuvenate and control excess sebum all in one go. Furthermore, always look for products that contain hyaluronic acid or alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) for the extra oil control. If you are planning to do a DIY mask, below are

(a)Papaya – A study done in 2014 by IJPS (Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Science) found that papaya fights oil, bacteria and helps reduce melanin, which causes hyperpigmentation without drying your skin. Just mash up some fresh fruit and apply on your face.

(b)Clay – most off the shelf masks have it, instead you could just purchase the cosmetic clay powder. Clay is wonderful oil absorbent, try and mix it with some fresh papaya for a mask. Do not leave it to dry completely instead leave it for just 15 mins.

(c)Lemon and egg whites – Lightly beat an egg white with a teaspoon of lemon juice and dab it on the face as a mask. You can also add some mashed up strawberries for the extra dose of Vitamin C. But if you are allergic to lemon please skip it.

4. Moisturize away

Even oily skin needs hydration. Dryness will make the sebaceous glands overwork. Use a fragrance-free water-based moisturizer, which will not burden the pores with extra oil.

5. Honey

Honey is the best natural remedy for any kind of skin. Its an all in one product, it hydrates the skin, reduces oil and also kills acne-causing bacteria. You can add it to your masks, or use it on the affected area or dab your face with it every other day and wash.

6. Green Tea toner

Green tea contains polyphenols (Antioxidants) which control inflammation, sebum, and bacteria which is an excellent product for oily skin. Also, toners help tighten pores and reduce oil, hence try to find a product that contains green tea or you can use green tea itself. Just steep green tea leaves in warm water and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on your face regularly.

7. Blotting Paper

Dealing with excessively greasing skin can be overwhelming because it makes your skin feel like sweating all day long. This is where blotting paper comes in handy, all you need to do is carry them in your handbag blot away the excess oil on your face. This helps during the summer season when the oil makes your face look all shiny and greasy. Also, they are economical and convenient.

8. Oatmeal/ Ground Almonds

Exfoliation is one of the most important parts of any skincare routine. As this helps remove dirt, dead skin cells and excess oil. Moreover exfoliating regularly helps prevent breakouts. Oatmeal and ground almonds are one of the best natural ingredients for exfoliation. Mix them with honey and exfoliate twice a week for supple skin.

9. Clean Eating

Consuming a diet high in greasy fast foods would worsen oily skin. Eating clean with anyways help overall health, which also contributes to healthy skin. Even though there isn’t research to fully prove this point, switching to dark leafy veggies, fruits and nuts would help the skin in many ways.
